Eugenics? Of Course it's Eugenics!!

It was infamous eugenicist Harry Haiselden of Chicago who uttered these words in the early 20th century when asked whether euthanizing disabled infants was, indeed, eugenics.

Today, alas, the E-word is almost as verboten as the N-word. For the E-word, too bad, because, increasingly, what we are seeing in the assisted suicide/euthanasia wars is that yes, folks, we are fast getting used to the idea that it's OK to kill people we think are too different from the rest of us.

Dark lessons from our history should make us wary of euthanasia
Twenty years ago, University of Victoria historian Angus McLaren wrote a fascinating book on eugenics in Canada in the early 20th century, Our Own Master Race. The study showed how appealing to Canadians was the language of this movement that spoke about a threatened "master race" of the between-the-world-wars period. The menace came not only from "defective" immigrants but also from poor "ignorant mothers," "idiots," "imbeciles," the mentally ill, and the mentally challenged. more
